When you think of China and clean technology, its dominance in solar is probably the first thing to come to mind. But Chinaโ€™s superiority in green technology encompasses almost every aspect of the industry.

Its latest advance in wind turbine technology is evidence.

The new Mingyang OceanX wind turbine employs a dual blade design and will set the record as the worldโ€™s largest single-capacity floating wind platform. With each turbine generating 8.3 MW of power, the design is projected to annually generate 54,000 MWh of electricity - enough to power about 30,000 homes.

The dual blades are supported by a Y-shaped tower mounted on a single platform. The platform itself is designed to rotate 360 degrees to improve safety and stability. And up to 17 levels of typhoon resistance are integrated within it to withstand extreme weather conditions including category 5 hurricanes and typhoons.

To give you an idea of the massive size of the design, the blades are 145 meters (476 ft) in length. From the center of one blade to the center of the other measures 585 meters (1919 ft). And the height of the structure measures 335 meters (1099 feet) high.

What are these measurements equivalent to?

โ–ถ The blades themselves are equivalent to the length of more than 1.5 football fields.

โ–ถ The height of the tower is just short of the height of the Empire State Building sans its antenna

โ–ถ And the distance between the center of the two turbines is just shy of laying two Eiffel towers end-to-end.

Keep in mind that these turbines are designed to be installed on floating platforms. It is the epitome of advanced engineering.

Iโ€™m no fan of China. It is an untrustworthy partner, and in my opinion, it poses the largest threat to global stability.

Nonetheless, you have to take your tip your hat to their ability to consistently advance clean technology.
