Planet Pulse: A rhythmic check in on climate change

𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗲𝘁 𝗣𝘂𝗹𝘀𝗲 - A curated sample of the week’s more interesting, important, or just amusing stories.

Every morning I review close to 50 news feeds and unfortunately the headlines seem to be trending more negatively. The clean technology industry – particularly solar - is trying to maintain a brave face by highlighting the record installations. The problem is that all the records are in the rear-view mirror.

Notably, there have been several articles about renewables raising the cost of electricity. In fact, a leaked memo from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority - a pro clean technology entity – suggested that if the state adheres to its Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act law, some residents could experience increases to their utility bill of as much as $4,100 per year.

There was a similar article on energy costs in the UK. The Financial Times noted that because of the intermittent nature of renewables, Britain has had to rely on ever-costlier natural gas to smooth the power generation curve. It also noted that although wind and solar are cheap to run, they are expensive to install.

I’ve been warning of a “day of reckoning” when it comes to the limitations of wind and solar, and we may be seeing the first signs of that occurring. I’ll of course continue to track the worldwide ebbs and flows.

As for today, I try to keep things lighter in Planet Pulse. This week’s edition includes more follow up stories, along with poking more fun at Elon Musk. Doing so has become a bit of a hobby for me. I may ultimately eat my words, but I doubt it.
