The Indian government declared that the cabinet has approved a new set of climate pledges for 2030, including a promise to cut emissions intensity by 45 percent and switch to about 50 percent of electric power derived from non-fossil fuels.
Key components of India's amended Nationally Determined Contribution are the nation's new pledges. NDCs, which outline countries' interim pledges on the path to net zero, are a significant component of their duties under the Paris Agreement.
India's first Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) was submitted to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in 2015 with the following objectives: achieve a cumulative installed capacity of non-fossil energy of 40% by 2030; reduce the emissions intensity of its GDP by 33 to 35% compared to 2005 levels; and add an additional 2.5 to 3 billion tonnes of CO2 equivalent through forest and tree cover.
