In 2025, the US solar market felt the chill after the Trump administration yanked tax breaks and subsidies. Utility-scale solar installations fell by 16% and community projects by 25%. Despite these setbacks, solar + storage contributed 79% of all new US power capacity last year—most of which came from states won by Trump.
Major windfall: Meanwhile, the US lost its prominent spot among the world’s largest wind markets last year. Chinese companies represented eight of the world’s top 10 wind turbine suppliers, and the nation became the first-ever to add more than 100GW of wind in one year. As for second place, India elbowed out the US and Germany.
