NEWS: Offshore wind’s cloudy day had a silver lining

The country’s biggest offshore wind farm has begun spinning out electricity. (E&E News)

  • On the same day the Trump admin bought out two of TotalEnergies’s wind projects, Dominion’s 2.6-GW Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind energized its first of 176 turbines. It’s among the country’s largest renewable energy projects ever built, and will serve up to 660,000 homes when fully up and running.

  • Why this one worked: Beyond Trump’s political agenda, the Total projects faced financial turmoil. In 2022, the company paid around $1B to lease nearly 140K acres off the NY and NC coasts, and later lost federal tax credits with last year’s budget law. Dominion, meanwhile, paid $1.6M for 112K acres off Virginia in 2013.
