Next-gen geothermal energy could theoretically replace 42% of the EU’s fossil fuel generation, per a new report from energy think tank Ember. (Grist)
While traditional geothermal is limited to volcanic hotspots, these new systems use drilling techniques adapted from oil & gas to fracture deep, hot rock, creating artificial reservoirs that can generate power almost anywhere.
Beyond electricity, "networked geothermal" systems can heat and cool homes directly while also acting as giant underground batteries to balance the grid.
