U.S. nuclear power on the move!

Earlier today, Reuters published a revealing new article by Eduardo Garcia and Robin Sayles, suggesting that nuclear power capacity will grow from 97 gigawatts (GW) today, to about 104 GW by the end of the decade – up 7%. The drivers are investments in lower risk restarts and life-extending upgrades, rather than building higher cost new reactors. The informative write-up provides a thorough accounting of recent announcements including the repowering of Holtec International’s 800-MW Palisades Nuclear plant. On July 24, 2025, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission reauthorized the Michigan plant’s operator license. The fast track is driven most by the recent surge in artificial intelligence (AI) technology and data center development. Powering good!
