NEWS: US to Own Nuclear Reactors Stemming From Japan’s $550 Billion Pledge

The US will buy and own up to 10 large nuclear reactors. (Bloomberg)

  • Who foots the bill? Japan, potentially. The projects could be covered by the non-binding commitment Japan made last month to fund $550B in US projects, according to Carl Coe, DOE chief of staff.. That promise included as much as $80B for building new reactors made by Westinghouse.

  • “The role of having the government involved in private markets is sacrosanct— you just don’t do it,” Coe said at a conference. “But this is a national emergency.”
