NEWS: Supreme Court nixes Texas' challenge of nuclear waste license

A Supreme Court ruling on nuclear waste disposal permitting just cleared a major legal hurdle for ongoing development. (Axios)

  • In a blow to Texas oil interests, the Supreme Court ruled that the state and private landowners can’t challenge the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s license for a private nuclear waste storage facility in Texas. Why? Because they were not formal parties in the original licensing process. 

  • The decision upholds the NRC’s authority to permit temporary off-site storage for spent nuclear fuel, though broader disputes about NRC authority persist.
