NEWS: Supreme Court clears the way for temporary nuclear waste storage in Texas and New Mexico

A 6–3 ruling from the Supreme Court has reinstated federal licenses for interim nuclear waste sites in Texas and New Mexico, removing a key legal block. But state opposition remains strong. (Texas Tribune)

  • Texas law still bans offsite high-level waste storage, and Gov. Greg Abbott says the project won’t proceed. Interim Storage Partners has already paused its Texas plans, while Holtec’s New Mexico project may now advance.

  • The ruling offers short-term relief for overcrowded reactor sites with no permanent US repository, but it ramps up long-term tensions between federal regulators and state governments.
