NEWS: Owner confirms plans to reopen Kewaunee nuclear plant site

Another “zombie” nuclear site is coming back to life. (Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel)

  • Utah-based EnergySolutions officially filed a notice of intent with the NRC to return nuclear power to the Kewaunee Power Station in Wisconsin. The original plant was shut down in 2013 for economic reasons, and the site was actively being dismantled as recently as 2022.

  • The plan involves building a new facility on the existing site (likely advanced reactors) to leverage the existing transmission infrastructure and local workforce.

  • While the demand is urgent, the timeline is…not: The partners don't expect to file for major licensing until 2028, with a target operational date around 2038.
