Nuclear startup Last Energy has raised $100M to build "plug-and-play" SMRs. (TechCrunch)
No reinventing the wheel: Last Energy is using a 1950s maritime reactor design and sealing the entire core inside a 1,000-ton solid steel block.Â
It requires no expensive concrete containment, runs for 6 years without refueling, and simply remains on-site as its own permanent waste cask once the fuel is spent.
With a 5 MW pilot slated at Texas A&M next year, the company plans to mass-manufacture 20 MW units by 2028 to deploy for data centers and other large power users.
