The Palisades nuclear plant is coming out of retirement, a move that marks the first time the NRC has given the go-ahead to restart a permanently-closed US nuclear power station. (Field Notes)
The plant was decommissioned in 2022 amid growing competition from cheaper natural gas and renewables.
Holtec International, which acquired the plant a few years back for decommissioning, received a $1.5 billion loan from the Biden DOE’s Loan Programs Office to restart the plant. The current administration has continued bankrolling the project even after axing LPO’s funding.
