Invitation to cooperation.
My name is Melezhуk Leonid. I am a scientist from Ukraine. I want to present to you our project, which we have been working on for 10 years. This project is related to climate change and helping to achieve carbon neutrality. We also understand the incredibly difficult challenges facing Ukraine, and the whole of Europe after attempts by Russia to invade the territory of Ukraine.
The war is waged not only with weapons, but also with energy. The energy sector of European countries needs significant changes and the transition to Renewable Energy.
Unfortunately, we all understand that gas reserves in Ukraine and in Europe will be not enough for a long time. And the problem of using Russian gas and the environmental problem of CO2 emissions will remain for a long time.
We understand why European countries are not able to fully switch to Renewable Energy. After all, solar and wind power plants do not have the ability to accumulate significant amounts of energy in times when there is no sun or wind. We need energy-regulating capacities in the form of nuclear power plants and power plants operating on coal and natural gas.
In order to switch to 100% renewable energy sources, one more source of renewable energy is needed: Power Plant on biomass. Biomass is obtained by creating a Fast growing Energy Forest.
Biomass Power Plants allow us to regulate and top up to 100% the use of renewable energy from other sources at night and in winter. Hydrogen technology still needs time for industrial use.
Compared to a nuclear power plant, which can change the amount of energy produced only by turning off individual units of the station and this takes a lot a time. Also, raw materials for a nuclear power plant are not friendly to nature and people. Biomass Power Plant´s productivity can be changed within 20 minutes. And raw materials for it are grown within a radius of 100 km from the station.
Synergy is necessary to fully transition to renewable energy sources: Biomass Power Plants guarantee constant, uninterrupted energy supply to consumers.
- Biomass is a product that allows replacing fossil coal in the ratio of 1 ton of biomass (chips) = 0.8 tons of brown coal, or = 0.46 tons of anthracite, or 510 m3 of natural gas. It is used in Power Plants and Boiler Plants for partial and in the perspective of complete replacement of fossil coal.
We have developed a program that will help to switch to 100% Renewable Energy. This is a project: "Fast growing Energy Forest '' which will help in a fairly short time in the future to provide European countries with wood raw materials (biomass). Of course, the Energy Willow and Poplar plantations planted this year will be able to produce biomass only for the third year, but it will already be a constant, reliable and own source of energy for many decades to come.
At first glance, it may seem that this cannot significantly affect the energy resource of the State.
I ask you to familiarize yourself with the calculations, which are confirmed by dozens of scientists of Ukraine and calculations for European countries (Annex No1) with real figures!
We also need to take into account the European Green Deal program to reduce CO2 emissions and the global drought, which is rapidly changing climate conditions and we will constantly lose territories that are still suitable for the creation of the Fast growing Energy Forest.
The project is large-scale and significant. And without political will and support of the state, it is difficult to implement it. Similar projects already successfully work in the USA, Denmark, Sweden and in some other countries.
Our research team developed and was ready to implement immediately the "Program for the Development of Renewable Energy Sources in Ukraine for 2022-2029".
Unfortunately, the war changed our plans. In Ukraine today there are few chances to start this project.
But we can already begin preparations for the implementation of this Program by creating a Fast growing Energy Forest on the lands of Europe. This will give a double benefit:
Potential of European countries:
-with the use of marginal lands of European countries (within 2% of the total area) and the creation of Industrial Plantations of Energy Willows (IPEW) for growing forests for biomass, which is about 211 million tons per year, or reduces natural gas use by 56.6 billion m3 each year and save 14, 7 billion euros a year.
- reduction of CO2 emissions by 2.3 billion tons, through the creation of industrial plantations of energy willows (IPEW) on the marginal lands of European countries with an annual rainfall of over 600 mm.
- the creation of the IPEW as a forest strip along highways (patent №139085, page #6) will replace another 26 billion m3 of gas and save 7 billion euros each year.
- reduction of CO2 emissions by another 870 million tons per year by creating industrial plantations of energy willows (IPEW) on the roads of European countries with an annual rainfall of over 600 mm.
At the same time, by developing this Program in European countries, our scientists will create the basis for the rapid further implementation of the Program in Ukraine as soon as the war ends. Because to create a "Fast growing Energy Forest" you need three main components:
-Earth
-Technique
- licensed planting material (we have 11 of our varieties and are ready to cooperate).
Marginal land in Ukraine is available, equipment can be bought, but planting material needs to be grown in 2-3 years for Ukraine in significant volumes. Having started the creation of the "Fast growing Energy Forest" this autumn in European countries, in 2-3 years we will receive excellent planting material from European fields in the required volumes for the further rapid development of the Program in Ukraine and throughout Europe.
To date, we have consolidated our 10 years of experience and created the All-European Energy Resource and Biotechnology Academy (VERBA), which already has the following achievements:
- our specialists created 11 varieties of Energy Willow on their own and received certificates of Ukrainian origin;
- 9 practical and experimental plantations of Energy willow in Ukraine, Portugal;
- created an economically operating full-cycle model; from growing willow to getting heat in the boiler room (more than 10 boiler houses);
- received a Patent of Ukraine and the United States for the creation of the world's first forest protection strip "A way to use the rotational-plantation strips of fast-growing willow and poplar cultivars to protect roads and railways";
- created the first pilot project on the afforestation of roadside lanes on the ring road of Obukhov, Ukraine. This method can be quickly implemented, it is much cheaper than the existing one, absorbs CO2 5 times more, and brings dividends in the form of biomass. A significant expansion of the area of willow plantations will also contribute to increasing the forest cover of the territories of Ukraine.
VERBA Academy conducts activities and plans for an active further development:
- select energy plants and adapt them to different regions of Europe;
- to develop a map of marginal lands and heat generation facilities in Europe;
- to unite the owners of boiler houses and owners of marginal lands into clusters within a radius of 100 km (economically justified);
- to train specialists in the field of bioenergy and conduct scientific research in the context of alternative energy. And also in the future we are ready to create new plantations in a mass mode.
The above-mentioned project is aimed at researching, developing, breeding energy willow and creating a full cycle of electricity and heat production from biomass. Or creating Green Certificates to reduce CO2 emissions.
The heat of combustion of energy willows, like pine trees, is about 17 kJ/kg, and the growth of the plant in one year reaches up to 3 meters 35 cm.
From one hectare of energy willow plantations (subject to an annual increase in dry matter of 12 t / ha), up to 200 GJ of energy can be obtained annually, which is equivalent to 4.7 thousand tons m3 of natural gas. When comparing the cost of natural gas or coal relative to willow chips (biomass), a local product of at least 20% will be cheaper.
We emphasize that willow is grown on lands unsuitable for agriculture, which today do not bring any profit.
As part of the implementation of this project, we will be able to:
∙ To ensure thermal and energy independence of objects of a particular region at affordable, reduced by 10-30%, tariffs. Since the project involves the cultivation of energy willow in the regions locally, and therefore - the lack of costs for the transportation of raw materials will significantly reduce the price.
∙ Create new jobs in the regions and increase the turnover of funds at the local level.
∙ Pay taxes locally.
∙ Provide boiler houses with local fuel regardless of: coal and forest fund.
∙ Energy willow, a plant that can grow efficiently and quickly, even on soils unsuitable for agriculture (technical) soils, wetlands and peatlands, of which there are a large number in Ukraine and enough in Europa. Energy willow significantly improves soil fertility, restoring it.
- Financial flows for gas will be transferred to pay local farmers for biomass and to local budgets in the form of taxes. We would like to form long-term serious decent relations so that as a result of joint efforts, we can all get a good scientific and economic effect.
