Trakya Electricity Distribution Inc. (TREDAŞ) is one of Turkey’s 21 licensed private electricity distribution companies, serving 1.3 million subscribers across Edirne, Tekirdağ, and Kırklareli in the Thrace region. Responsible for managing and maintaining the power grid, TREDAŞ prioritizes service reliability, smart grid solutions, and digital transformation to enhance efficiency. The company operates under Turkey’s Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EMRA) and actively invests in modernization, sustainability, and operational improvements to reduce power losses and optimize field operations.
CHALLENGE
As TREDAŞ’s operations continued to expand and expectations around operational efficiency and service quality evolved, the existing systems began to fall short—unable to effectively meet emerging needs and resulting in increased operational costs. Traditional tools like paper forms and disconnected digital tables, while once sufficient, were no longer capable of supporting the growing demands of modern utility management. These methods lacked real-time data integration, frequently causing delays in updates and occasional inconsistencies in spatial data. Moreover, maintaining multiple separate systems added complexity and led to higher operational expenses. To support future growth and ensure high service standards, TREDAŞ required a more integrated and scalable solution.
“Before implementing ArcGIS Utility Network, our existing systems were able to meet basic operational needs. However, as our infrastructure grew and operational demands increased, we began to see the limitations of these tools in addressing evolving requirements efficiently. In some cases, managing operations within the old setup resulted in higher costs. The absence of real-time data access also caused delays in updates and made coordination in the field more difficult. With the new system’s seamless integration and real-time updates, we are now able to operate more efficiently and with greater confidence.”- Emin SAKA GIS Manager, TREDAŞ.
SOLUTION
To overcome these challenges, TREDAŞ integrated Esri’s ArcGIS Utility Network with Safe Software’s FME technology and existing platforms like SAP IS-U and SAP-PM, creating a seamless and efficient data management system. This integration provided real-time data access, enabling field workers to update network information instantly, even in remote areas with limited connectivity. The seamless integration with SAP ensured that field changes were accurately reflected in the network management system, eliminating inconsistencies and delays. Additionally, the web-based infrastructure and offline capabilities streamlined workflows, reducing manual effort and improving operational efficiency.
