Startups in India, Japan, Spain, and Taiwan are rolling out stations where drivers can swap a dead battery for a full one in minutes. India’s Battery Smart already does 3.5 million swaps a month for scooters and rickshaws.
San Francisco startup Ample is partnering with Mitsubishi, Stellantis, and Uber to test swappable batteries for cars and delivery trucks. It says its stations can be set up in three days and avoid long charging waits or power grid problems.
