NEWS: US energy firms spend record sums on power plants for data centers – and more top energy stories

US utilities are investing record amounts—$212 billion in 2025, set to rise to $228 billion by 2027—to build new power plans and grid capacity for surging data center demand. (WEF)

  • AI data centers now consume as much electricity as 100,000 households each. The largest ones will use 20x that, according to the IEA. Utilities are racing to meet this load with new gas, solar, nuclear, and hybrid solutions.

  • Keep in mind: That same AI demand could help optimize the grid. From integrating renewables to boosting energy efficiency, the tech driving load growth is also capable of managing it, so long as utilities can keep up.
