A new SEPA report urges regulators to get ahead of bidirectional EV charging by requiring interconnection for all systems. (SEPA)
At least eight states are developing policies to let EVs and electric buses export power, providing grid services similar to stationary batteries.
SEPA warns that vague marketing terms like “vehicle-to-home” or “vehicle-to-grid” should be replaced with clear technical definitions (non-parallel, parallel non-exporting, and parallel exporting). This would help utilities determine when interconnection is required and ensure safeguards against backfeeding.
Full interconnection, SEPA argues, not only ensures safety but also enables compensation for exports, dynamic rates, and participation in VPPs.
