NEWS: Interconnection Guidance for Residential Bidirectional EV Charging

A new SEPA report urges regulators to get ahead of bidirectional EV charging by requiring interconnection for all systems. (SEPA)

  • At least eight states are developing policies to let EVs and electric buses export power, providing grid services similar to stationary batteries.

  • SEPA warns that vague marketing terms like “vehicle-to-home” or “vehicle-to-grid” should be replaced with clear technical definitions (non-parallel, parallel non-exporting, and parallel exporting). This would help utilities determine when interconnection is required and ensure safeguards against backfeeding.

  • Full interconnection, SEPA argues, not only ensures safety but also enables compensation for exports, dynamic rates, and participation in VPPs.
