NEWS: CPS Energy to test new method of removing carbon from natural gas

San Antonio’s CPS Energy is testing a cleaner way to use natural gas in homes: Texas’s first pyrolysis-based turquoise hydrogen pilot. (San Antonio Report)

  • The utility is partnering with Washington State-based Modern Hydrogen to test pyrolysis, a process that strips carbon from natural gas before it hits local pipes. While they’re starting small—producing just enough to power around 100 homes at peak—it’s the first test of its kind in Texas.

  • The result? Lower-carbon “turquoise hydrogen” for everyday home and industrial use, while the leftover solid carbon gets turned into asphalt.
