NEWS: Caltrain electrified trains return power to grid, offsetting energy costs

One cool thing: Caltrain’s electric trains now give power back to the grid. (CBS News)

  • How it works: Thanks to regenerative braking, Caltrain’s 37 fully electric trains return about 23% of their power whenever they slow down. That energy—once fed back for free—will now earn compensation under a first-of-its-kind deal with Peninsula Clean Energy and San Jose Clean Energy.

  • The move follows Caltrain’s $2.5B electrification project, which shifted the Bay Area commuter line entirely to renewable power. It’s cutting 250K metric tons of emissions per year and could offset millions in energy costs annually.
