Geothermal can work in dense urban environments, a new mixed-use development in New York City suggests. (Facilities Dive)

  • Fitting renewable infrastructure into a tight, pre-existing city grid is a major logistical challenge. But engineers at LCOR’s 400K sq. ft. project on Coney Island successfully drilled 153 bore wells 500 ft. deep directly into the bedrock beneath the foundation before construction began.

  • What it means: The closed-loop system relies on a consistent network of underground pipes with very few moving parts, so operators can expect decades of relatively low energy and maintenance costs.
