Artificial Intelligence Enhances Remote Collaboration

Next generation Generative Artificial Intelligence solutions, such as ChatGPT, are working their way from the lab into a growing variety of business applications. The technology is improving remote collaboration systems in a few ways. Platform vendors are adding features that improve the experience itself as well as features that streamline communication. These emerging solutions improve energy company productivity.

Working remotely has become more commonplace since the pandemic. In addition to the mobile service teams, a large number of white collar workers began using collaboration systems like Cisco Webex, Microsoft Teams, and Zoom, to complete their chores.

Since they are working at home, employees use consumer networks to exchange business information. Performance can vary, sometimes dramatically. Cisco’s Webex AI Codec improves exchanges with functions, such as noise removal, de-reverberation, and bandwidth extension. Its video system has been enhanced to deliver high-definition images.

Easing Interpersonal Communications

Furthermore, such solutions include personal productivity aids. These features start with the often cumbersome process of scheduling meetings. AI algorithms analyze users' scheduling patterns, preferences, and availability and suggest optimal meeting times. This feature helps users save time and ensures more efficient use of team members' time.

Cisco’s Webex includes Meeting Summaries. They help employees catch up on missed portions of meetings or entire meetings. Generated in real-time, Meeting Summaries are organized into chapters and highlights, so employees can skip to various topics and review during a meeting. The summaries offer a customized feature: messages from their boss are separated from others.

AI-powered transcription services automatically transcribe spoken words into text during video conferences.  This feature benefits users who may have difficulty hearing or are working in places with a lot of noise.  AI-driven translation services facilitate communication among users who speak different languages, breaking down language barriers.

Increasingly, AI analyzes voice communications and determines the sentiment behind messages. The system can gauge team morale, identify potential conflicts, or assess the overall emotional tone and level of support of a conversation.

With Cisco’s Webex, a Change Message Tone provides recommended changes to tone, format, and messaging.  A confrontational response like, "this isn't good," becomes more positive, "this is a fantastic document, but the upfront summary could use some improvement”.

AI has been enhancing mobile worker communications, making such interactions richer and more efficient. New functions, such transcription services, sentiment analysis, and automated virtual assistants, have the potential to improve energy company remote communication and help them better support the growing number of mobile workers.
