Electricity markets worldwide are racing to decarbonize. Since 2000, global demand for power increased by more than 70% with a large part of that increase being from renewable sources such as wind and solar, which now represents nearly a third of all power generation. 

In June, Austria announced that it had installed a record one gigawatt of solar photovoltaics (PV) in 2022. Neighboring Switzerland also surpassed the one gigawatt mark last year, and Germany appears on course to install 12 gigawatts of solar in 2023. The U.S. solar industry expects to add a record 32 gigawatts (GW) of new capacity in 2023, a 52% increase from 2022.Wind energy is also being added at a rapid rate. In 2022, Europe added 19 gigawatts of onshore and offshore wind, and is expected to add an additional 20 gigawatts every year between 2023 and 2027.  

Similarly robust installations of other distributed energy resources (DERs) like battery storage and electric vehicle (EV) chargers across the continent are advancing progress towards critical net-zero carbon emissions goals. But the rapid and accelerating influx of renewables and DERs is making the work of utilities more complex as they face the task of integrating and managing growing amounts of grid-edge resources.

The transition from electricity markets served by large fossil fuel power plants to ones that are highly decentralized and decarbonized forces utilities to grapple with many questions, including:

  • How visible and controllable are the renewables and DERs connecting to the grid?
  • What is the quality of the data produced by new resources and can the information be relied on to make operational and longer-term planning decisions?
  • Are utilities prepared for both the coming avalanche of new grid assets as well as emerging technologies, like bi-directional EV chargers, that can be leveraged to support grid reliability?
