The grid is often called the largest and most complex machine that engineers have ever created, and that was before the advent of smart grid technology, modernized solutions, and more taking place across T&D infrastructure all the time today. Keeping up with the developments on grid technology, associated grid markets, and appropriate regulations and policies can be a full-time job, but with the aid of the Grid Network on Energy Central (composed of the Grid Professionals Group and the Transmission Professionals Group) you can be privy to the best shortcut to stay up to date on the news, musings, and debates shaping the grid today.

When talking about grid upgrades, sometimes we get caught up in incremental thinking. But what if we thought big? What if we imagined the supergrids? Harsha Mairaju of the World Geospatial Industry Council takes us on that thought experiment and may invoke some new ways of considering what you envision for the future of the grid systems in energy. Take a look and let him know where you agree or disagree.
SDG&E and Cajon Valley Union School District Flip the Switch on Region’s First Vehicle-to-Grid Project Featuring Local Electric School Buses Capable of Sending Power to the Grid

But we don’t need to look into the too distant future to realize the ways the grid is transforming in front of our eyes. Case in point is this in practice example and study being put into practive by SDG&E, where V2G and new flexible assets on the grid are transforming a local school district. Take a look at this compelling project and if you think it might be something that could work at your utility, perhaps you can leave a question for Sara to learn from how they got to this point.

Any conversation about the state of the grid today would be incomplete if it didn’t include an earnest review on the reliability issues that continue to make headlines across the country. This summer, NERC released a comprehensive state of reliability report providing key and expert insights into what’s real, what the pain points are, and what action needs to be taken. Check out the report and see what you can learn.
