VPP vs DERMS: What’s the Difference?

At first glance, a virtual power plant (VPP) and a distributed energy resource management system (DERMS) appear to be very similar, as they’re both designed to coordinate with DERs and integrate with grid operations. However, as Stuart McCafferty, President at GridIntellect observes in this article, there are some subtle, yet important distinctions. For example, DERMSs are operated by utilities while VPPs may also be operated by third-party DER aggregators. Stuart notes that these differences are likely to become more blurred in the coming years.
Can Utilities Fix the Energy Equity Gap With Renewables?

The notion of households reducing their energy costs with DERs like solar PV and batteries is a helpful one. However, the households who need to lower their costs the most are also those who can’t afford to buy such items. Here, Becky Wheeler, Head of Marketing at PXiSE Energy Solutions suggests that utilities can be part of the solution by adding solar and storage to their own energy infrastructure and providing that power to everyone. She notes that, with the help of a DERMS, utilities can use this method without worrying about grid instability.
Drive To Net Zero Emissions: Digital Can Be a Powerful Abatement Lever for Downstream Utilities

Utility emissions can be classified into two sources, energy sales and distribution (the primary source of emissions), and activities that generate a footprint. In this piece, Anjan Lahiri, General Manager – Utilities: New Energy and Digital at Wipro Limited notes that utilities can use digital opportunities to make the transition to Net Zero faster, more profitable, and more customer-centric. They include tracking green energy supply and sale, reducing consumption through automated energy management, and improving ways of working.

In this post, Michael Skurla, Chief Product Officer at Radix IoT describes how a number of technologies are coming together to allow a wider range of predictive capabilities within facility management, logistics, staffing, marketing, and safety. The results of such analyses can be used to forecast preventative maintenance and develop other actionable insights. Michael explains that such capabilities are now essential to the growing digital environment.
