After years of steady growth in the electric vehicle (EV) space and more stakeholders in the auto space going all in on the electrification of transportation, the coming decade is poised to become a true pivot point in the EV revolution. Changing our transportation systems to be guided by where, when, and how we charge our cars rather than filling them up with gasoline requires a rethinking of the relevant infrastructure, expectations, and more. Rapidly, though, what's becoming clear is that the utility industry will need to adapt rapidly and on a vast scale, arguably more so than any single change in the power sector since its inception.
From concerns about how to provide power and transmission needed for the added load to the unique energy demand profiles that will be created across residential and commercial utility ratepayers to what it means for the makeup, operation, and maintenance of grid infrastructure, utilities are going to be more involved in everyday transportation than ever before. EVs will no doubt create a new-look utility sector, and the smart power providers are preparing for this reality today, even if present-day penetration of EVs in their service areas is still limited.
To help foster these critical and forward-looking conversations, the Energy Central team is looking to focus our August Special Issue on "Electrification of Transportation & Its Impact on Utilities."
And for this issue, we want to hear from you! We are seeking stories, white papers, and case studies from our community for this Special Issue Edition. We are especially looking for insights on the following topics: EVs, Load Management, Infrastructure Support, Regulatory, Customer Collaboration and Communication.
Our Special Issues present a unique opportunity for you to share your experiences with peers in the industry and perhaps even help kickstart conversations that help you and others uncover new potential solutions and opportunities to areas of utility energy efficiency that you may be overlooking.
