The Trump administration will continue using emergency authority to block coal retirements, Energy Secretary Chris Wright confirmed this week. (Bloomberg)
“This administration’s policy is going to be to stop the closure of coal plants,” Wright said, warning that shutdowns would drive up prices and slow efforts to “reindustrialize the US economy.”
Roughly 27 GW of coal capacity—16% of the fleet—is slated to retire by 2028. The White House argues keeping plants online is key to meeting load growth. But at the same time, it has halted wind projects and unveiled policies limiting solar.
