NEWS: Fossil fuels are (sort of) spared in the shutdown

Interior Department documents show that oil, gas, and coal projects will be disrupted less than other sectors during the federal government shutdown. (Axios)

  • The Bureau of Land Management is continuing leasing and permitting tied to fossil fuels, funded through industry fees and exemptions tied to “national energy emergency” work.

  • The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management has staff in place to advance Gulf America Lease Sale 262 and prep 2026 offshore mineral lease sales, though only for time-sensitive projects.

  • The Office of Surface Mining will keep employees on to handle mining plan reviews and NEPA work for priority coal projects.
