NEWS: E.P.A. Weakens Limits on Mercury From Coal Plants

The EPA officially rolled back mercury limits on coal plants on Friday. (NYT)

  • EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin announced the repeal of stringent 2024 pollution rules, reverting to looser 2012 standards. This effectively reopens a regulatory loophole for facilities burning "lignite," an exceptionally dirty form of coal used by high-polluting facilities like North Dakota's Coal Creek Station.
