The EU’s $750B energy promise to the US makes good politics, but not much logistical sense.
Global energy expert Anne-Sophie Corbeau points out the math problem: In 2024, the EU imported about $89B in energy from the US—a third of the annual target. Total EU energy imports last year were ~$433B, meaning the bloc would have to divert 60% of all foreign energy purchases to US suppliers to hit the goal. As Corbeau and other experts have suggested, it seems unlikely the EU can do that with LNG only.
Just last month, Corbeau joined Power Perspectives to break down LNG’s role as a geopolitical wildcard and flag key US-China-Russia dynamics utility leaders should watch amid rising policy volatility. It’s a timely listen—check it out here.
