To help mitigate the risk of energy shortages on a day when ERCOT hit the highest peak demand month-to-date of almost 78 GW and forecasts 80.2 GW by the end of the month, CenterPoint Energy is deploying 15 large mobile generators, ranging from 27 MW to 32 MW, to the San Antonio area. These units, originally acquired after Winter Storm Uri, will now support ERCOT’s reliability efforts through March 2027.
🔌 The decision comes as CPS Energy’s planned retirements raised reliability concerns. ERCOT and CenterPoint agreed on a solution with no profit to the utility, prioritizing system stability over financial return.
đź’ˇ This move adds resilience to the Texas grid while complementing broader investments, like the $5B Greater Houston Resiliency Initiative, already delivering underground lines, automation devices, and storm-hardened infrastructure.
As extreme weather becomes more frequent, associated with a demand increase, flexible and fast-response solutions like mobile generation are proving essential in maintaining grid reliability across ERCOT.
