The Shetland HVDC interconnector project keeps on truckin'

Earlier this month, NKT completed the second stage cable pull-in of the 320 kV HVDC power cable for the Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks Transmission's (SSEN Transmission ) Shetland High Voltage Direct-Current (HVDC) link in the North Sea. The milestone sets the stage for the final campaign to connect Shetland with the mainland. The link will enable 600MW of renewable electricity generation to connect - including the 457 megawatt (MW) Viking Energy Wind Farm, which upon completion is set to be the UK’s most productive onshore wind farm. The Shetland link completes the first multiterminal HVDC system in Europe using voltage-sourced converter technology, invented by Hitachi Energy, and the second in the world. The project is on track to be completed by the Summer of 2024.
