NEWS: U.S. Warns of Cyberattacks Tied to Iran on Water and Energy Systems

Federal officials (vaguely) warned that Iran-affiliated hackers may be targeting US energy systems. (NYT)

  • Per a joint statement from agencies including CISA, FBI, and DOE: Attackers are keyed in on programmable logic controllers, upon which 50-80% of US grid control endpoints depend. The US and Israel used a similar tactic against Iran’s nuclear centrifuges nearly two decades ago.

  • CISA claimed the hackers were disrupting PLCs across the country’s critical infrastructure sectors…but were scant on specifics. NERC’s response? It’s “actively monitoring the grid,” said Kimberly Mielcarek, NERC VP of corporate and external communications. For now, she urges the industry to remain vigilant.
