NEWS: There aren’t enough AI chips to support data center projections, report says

We might be overestimating data center projections, according to new data from London Economics International. (Utility Dive)

  • The POV: Estimates of data center growth and the electricity needed to power AI are overstated—because of global constraints in semiconductor chip production.

  • Meeting the current expected demand for data centers in the US would require 90% of global chip supply through 2030, according to London Economics. “Such a scenario is unrealistic,” the report concluded.
