PJM is the first grid operator (so far) to fully incorporate ambient-adjusted transmission ratings. (Utility Dive)
For context: AARs update hourly based on ambient air temperatures. Compared with static ratings, they can boost capacity on transmission lines by up to 40%
Extension, please?: In 2021, FERC commanded grid operators and transmission owners to adopt AARs for near-term transmission service by July 2025 … but they’ve all blown past this deadline, citing logistical hurdles.
On March 4, PJM became the first grid operator to fully adopt the approach systemwide. SPP, ISO-NE, and CAISO plan to adopt AARs later this year, while MISO and NYISO may take until 2028.
While we’re in PJM: Wholesale electricity prices spiked 56% to $80.5 billion last year, according to its market monitor. “The price impacts have been very large and are not reversible,” said Joseph Bowring, president of Monitoring Analytics.
