NEWS: OpenAI says US 'electron gap' gives China an edge on AI

OpenAI just sent the White House an open letter. The message: We’re building the future of intelligence, but your grid can’t handle it.

Whose grid can? China’s, OpenAI contends. The country has treated electricity generation as “the foundation of industrial competitiveness,” leaving the US and its aging grid lagging behind.

And if the US wants to maintain its lead in AI development (and “unlock our greatest national economic opportunity since electricity drove the latter half of the Industrial Age,” as OpenAI put it), it needs to close what the company calls the “electron gap” with China.

Now accepting pitches for how the US can build like it’s 1942, not permit like it’s 2006.
