NEWS: Northeast grid operators confident facing winter demand as heating electrification rises

Northeast grid operators are heading into winter with more confidence than you’d expect from a region that’s rapidly electrifying its heating. (Utility Dive)

  • ISO-NE says it has 31 GW of capacity lined up against a peak forecast just over 21 GW. NYISO has a similar margin: about 30 GW available for a 24.2 GW peak.

  • Yes, but: Electrification is reshaping the load curve, and both operators still expect the region to become a winter-peaking system by the mid-2030s. Fuel constraints for gas units remain the main stress point during deep cold snaps.
