NEWS: New York City could face power reliability issues beginning next year

New York’s grid operator is warning NYC could face power reliability issues as early as next year. (Utility Dive)

  • NYISO says reliability margins in NYC will be “dangerously thin” starting in 2026, largely due to delayed clean energy projects, retirement of aging plants, and rapid demand growth from electrification and data centers. The problem could spread to Long Island by 2027 and the Hudson Valley by 2030.

  • Two projects are especially critical: the Champlain Hudson Power Express, which will bring hydroelectric power from Quebec, and the Empire Wind offshore project. Both have faced setbacks, and NYISO says their completion is essential to avoid shortfalls.

  • “The findings should be alarming,” said IPPNY’s Gavin Donohue. “If the right market signals are in place, the private sector will invest…but all potential solutions must be on the table.”
