NEWS: New U.S. electric generating capacity expected to reach a record high in 2026

The US is on track to add a record 86 GW of new generating capacity this year—and gas barely registers. (EIA)

  • By the numbers: Solar accounts for 51% of planned additions (43.4 GW), followed by battery storage 28% (24 GW) and wind 14% (11.8 GW). Natural gas is just 6.3 GW, 7% of the total. Texas alone is absorbing 40% of new solar and 53% of new storage capacity.

  • For context: 2025's 53 GW was already the largest single-year capacity installation since 2002. If 2026 hits target, the US will have added 139 GW in two years—most of it clean—regardless of what's happening at the federal policy level.
