NEWS: NERC overstates MISO reliability risks: market monitor

Reliability risks in MISO? Might not be as big a problem as NERC makes them sound. (Utility Dive)

  • MISO’s market monitor said NERC is overreacting to the region’s reliability risks by 1) underestimating demand response and 2) overestimating future power needs. Why? Flawed models that assume utilities would build almost exclusively intermittent renewable resources.

  • Some context: Out of all North American regions, NERC ranked MISO first in terms of risk of electricity shortfall in the next five years—despite the recent falling pace of capacity decline.
