77 large-load tariffs are now pending (or in place) across 36 states. (Utility Dive)
Regulators approved 29 last year alone as they worked to shield ratepayers from data center-driven cost increases, per a SEPA database. Between 2018-24, only 14 received approval. The definition of “large load” has shifted, too—thresholds that used to sit at five, 10, or 25 MW are now landing at 50+ MW as project sizes balloon.
An early sign they’re working: After regulators approved a new tariff last year, AEP Ohio halved its large-load forecast. But will these tariffs actually protect existing ratepayers? That depends on cost allocation…which most states haven’t worked through yet.
