NEWS: Google announces Minnesota data center in Pine Island, near Rochester

Google is building a new data center in Minnesota backed by a large, self-funded clean energy investment. (Star Tribune)

  • Code-named "Project Skyway," the 88-acre, 250K sq. ft. data center will utilize a zero-water cooling system, preserving local water resources at the cost of higher electricity usage.

  • To shield local Xcel Energy ratepayers from rate hikes, Google is entirely funding 1.4 GW of new wind and 200 MW of solar power. The contract includes an exit fee to protect the utility if Google abandons the project.

  • And: Google is footing the bill for a 300 MW battery system capable of supplying power for over 100 hours in a play for improved grid reliability.
