NEWS: ERCOT’s market is transitioning toward storage and solar

Texas is officially the king of green energy growth: Batteries and solar accounted for virtually all new grid capacity this year. (Renewable Energy World)

  • ERCOT reported that battery storage (>5.2 GW) and solar (>4.5 GW) dominated the 11 GW of new additions this year, leaving natural gas trailing behind despite a $10B state fund designed to boost fossil fuel plants.

  • Texas installed nearly 2X as much solar as California in the first 9 months of the year, though ERCOT CEO Pablo Vegas warns this reliance on intermittent power leaves the grid exposed during winter freezes when the sun is down and demand spikes.
