Phantom data centers drove 40% of PJM’s December capacity auction costs. (Utility Dive)
PJM’s independent market monitor said some $6.2B of those costs could be chalked up to data centers that haven’t been built but could come online by PJM’s 2027/28 delivery year.
This isn’t a one-off: Across the last three PJM base capacity auctions, data center forecasts above existing load have driven $21.3B in costs (45% of the total cost of cleared capacity).
