NEWS: California halts building code updates in a blow to electrification

California has frozen building code updates for the next half-decade, pausing a key path to building electrification. (Canary Media)

  • Buildings account for some 25% of California’s carbon pollution. And policies encouraging developers to build all-electric homes have worked—80% of line extension requests by builders to PG&E and SDG&E were electric-only in 2023.

  • Now, California will skip its scheduled 2028 residential code update, which could keep builders from further pursuing widespread building electrification.
