Energy in Brazil: the lack of DR
The energy sector solutions that have been discovered and implemented in the developed world derive from an identified characteristic: the need to be more efficient.
A simple and obvious finding: enabling demand reduction at peak times -Â compensating those who adhere, is much more efficient and cheaper than simply doing the traditional, which is to increase the supply capacity of the electricity sector's production chain.
The reason is obvious. Peak consumption lasts for a very short time. When comparing the investment referred to this consumption, very high cost values are reached in $/kWh.
Cost-sensitive countries have implemented - for years - programs such as DR (Demand Response) - which enable a real win-win:
* Those who adhere have a significant financial gain and,
* Suppliers in the production chain now perform better, as the same infrastructure serves consumption without the need of additional and very costly, additional CAPEX - Capital Expenditures.
When will we wake up, in Brazil, for this opportunity? Or will we just continue to pass on costs as tradition dictates?
