Buckle up!

Winter storm Elliott is racing south with potentially record-low temperatures and extremely high winds. Wind chill temps are expected to dip between -60 F. and -40 F. for much of the upper mountain and central states over the next 48 hours. The overnight low forecast for Atlanta Georgia on Friday night is a blustery 9 F. Both Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) and ERCOT have issued extreme cold weather alerts running from tomorrow morning (Thursday) thru December 26 (Monday). Driven by high winds, the Southwest Power Pool (SPP) is forecasting wind at nearly 29 GW tomorrow (12/22) at around 1:00 PM. Usually, when wind capacity nears 20 GW it starts to be curtailed. The record SPP peak for wind of 22.9 GW was set last spring. Driven by low temperatures, SPP is forecasting electricity demand near 43 GW (relatively high) around 7:00 PM CT tomorrow (12/22) night. Everyone stay safe and warm! The good news is that by next week this storm will be gone.
