This revealing graph and story, prepared by the stellar team at Grid Status, shows how battery operations have greatly expanded throughout the day in California ISO. In April, batteries discharged over 5,000 megawatts (MW) at peak times – a 100% increase over the average in 2023. In fact, according to Grid Status’s Record Tracker App, a new record for battery discharge was set last night (May 7) at 9:30 PM at 7,196 MW, and just six days ago, on May 2 at 2:20 PM, solar accounted for a record 18,538 MW. I look forward to seeing how these parameters, and the grid overall, performs during this summer’s peak periods in July and August.
