This is according to an informative new report by Google’s Ruth Porat, Thomas Kurian, James Manyika, and Kent Walker. To address the myriads of challenges to grow artificial intelligence (AI) and datacenter electricity demand, the group offers some well thought out new policy opportunities including ways to mitigate fuel cost uncertainty and streamline power grid and generation permitting processes. In addition, building on a grant by Google.org in partnership with key industry players like the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) and the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA), Google is supporting the Electrical Training Alliance to integrate advanced technologies into their training curriculums. The new program will help 100,000 electricians strengthen their skills while training 30,000 new apprentices — potentially a 70% increase in the electrical workforce pipeline by 2030.
