That is Edison Electric Institute’s (EEI) forecast for capital investment in the power grid from 2025 through 2029. The figures include investment in generation, distribution, and the transmission of electricity. EEI’s member electric companies invested a record $178.2 billion in 2024, marking the 13th consecutive year of record outlay. In the last decade alone, investment totaled $1.3 trillion. It will take more than $200 billion in new spending per year to meet the 2030 target of $1.1 trillion. This from EEI’s Annual Financial Review released earlier this week. “Our industry’s capital expenditures are higher than any other sector in the U.S. economy, outpacing transportation, retail, and other capital-intensive industries.” said EEI President and CEO Drew Maloney. There is a wealth of revealing data and charts wrapped into the 67-page report. Attached are just a few charts highlighting trends in capital expenditures, asset holdings, and generation capacity.
